Nearly 300 organizations, representing about 20% of the total number of plastic packaging manufacturing enterprises worldwide, have agreed to eliminate plastic waste and pollution at the source. Companies such as L’Oréal, Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, Unilever, and Amcor have signed the Global Commitment to a New Plastics Economy at our Ocean Conference in Bali. The commitment is led by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme.
Dubbed as the "new standard" for plastic packaging, the commitment stipulates that signatories will:
Eliminate problematic or unnecessary plastic packaging and transition from single-use to reusable packaging models.
Innovate to ensure that 100% of plastic packaging can be easily and safely reused, recycled, or composted by 2025.
Circulate plastic by significantly increasing the amount of reused or recycled plastic and manufacturing it into new packaging or products.
These goals will be reviewed every 18 months and further developed in the coming years, according to a press release from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation. Companies signing the commitment will disclose annual data on their progress to help drive momentum and ensure transparency.
Commenting on the initiative, Amcor CEO Ron Delia stated: "Plastic packaging is critical for products used by billions of consumers worldwide. It delivers high efficiency and adaptability to create safe, nutritious, and efficient products. We continue to innovate to make plastic packaging better while still protecting the environment."
In January 2018, Amcor became the first global packaging company to commit to developing all packaging that is recyclable or reusable by 2025, and a month prior, it announced breakthrough flexible plastic films capable of producing high-barrier protective fences, suitable for sterilization packaging and recyclable.
In the commitment announcement, Dame Ellen MacArthur described it as "a line in the sand, with businesses, governments, and others around the world uniting behind a clear vision of what we need to create a circular economy for plastic." This is not the endpoint, she emphasized, but a milestone in a challenging journey. "I encourage all businesses and governments to go further and join the race to create a circular economy for plastics. None of these materials should ever become waste or pollution," she said during the report's preparation.
This initiative and vision for a circular plastic economy are supported by the Global Nature Fund and have received endorsements from the World Economic Forum, the Consumer Goods Forum (an organization representing around 400 retailers and manufacturers from 70 countries), and 40 universities, organizations, and scholars. Over 15 financial institutions with assets exceeding $2.5 trillion have also supported the Global Commitment, and over $200 million has been committed by five investment funds to create a circular economy for plastics, as recognized by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation.
Green Packaging is also making efforts to improve designs and search for environmentally friendly materials to contribute to environmental improvement.
